The Nerikomi Hutch embodies my commitment to inventive, material-forward sustainability, uniting two signature processes—Nerikomi and Treillage—that address the same question from opposite directions. In my Nerikomi work, discarded plywood is transformed into stratified, sculptural surfaces, extending the life of a material typically destined for the landfill. By contrast, my Treillage technique reduces material use at the outset, relying on the smallest workable dimensions of solid wood to achieve both structural integrity and visual presence.

Shaped by the architecture of the poplar tree—a domestic species foundational to plywood production—the Nerikomi Hutch rises from the ground like a trunk branching upward. Hand-cast pewter pulls, modeled after the leaves of North American hardwoods, root the piece in its ecological origins, while a hand-applied ombré finish reinforces a sense of vertical growth and ascension. Together, these elements merge craft, ecology, and form into a single gesture of regenerative making.

The Nerikomi Notch represents the culmination of years spent refining my Nerikomi Wood technique, a process rooted in repetition, patience, and a commitment to sustainability. By distilling the object into a seemingly simple notched cylinder, I invite the maximal, expressive nature of the Nerikomi-patterned plywood to take the lead. The form becomes a quiet frame—an unobstructed stage on which the material can speak for itself—allowing viewers to encounter its intricacies without interference.

The piece functions with equal ease as a table or side table, yet its silhouette gestures toward a freshly felled tree. The notches echo the very cuts that bring down a trunk, referencing the moment when raw material transitions from living organism to possibility. In this way, Notch becomes both an homage to origin and a meditation on transformation—an exploration of how pattern, process, and form can hold the memory of where an object comes from as much as what it becomes.

The Décollage Table will be exhibited at Design Miami with Friends ArtSpace in December 2025.

The Décollage Table introduces a new body of work focused on transforming discarded matter into sculptural, enduring objects. Beginning with wood veneer, already a material optimized for efficiency, I extend that ethos by reclaiming the offcuts and remnants generated within my own woodworking community. Layering these fragments into thick, laminated strata and sanding back through them, I reveal intricate, unrepeatable patterns that echo the visual language of décollage. The resulting form elevates what was once overlooked, using subtraction as a means of uncovering beauty and renewing value.

The table’s form was initially inspired by the dynamic shapes of deciduous leaves, a nod to the origin of the material. Over time, however, the character of the material itself took precedence. The laminated layers dictated both strength and surface continuity, guiding the design toward broad, planar expanses that highlight the veneer’s intricate patterns. Subtle curves and gestures preserve traces of the natural inspiration, but the final composition emphasizes functional generosity—a large, uninterrupted surface that allows the material’s complexity to be fully appreciated. Serendipitously, the patterns that emerge across this expanse evoke visions of fallen leaves, recalling the original inspiration. In this way, the table harmonizes poetic reference with practical demands, transforming reclaimed fragments into a cohesive, tactile landscape.

The River is part of Our Nerikomi wood seriesand is the third rendition of the Nerikomi Sideboard with Plinths. The terra cotta dyed Nerikomi Sideboard is made from our Nerikomi wood material that we create from reclaimed scrap plywood saved from various cabinet shops. It has four doors with glass shelves on the interior. The plinths on top of the sideboard are interchangeable to promote interaction and provide moveable surfaces in order to create different vignettes in your home.

This piece saved over 200lbs from the landfill.

The Nerikomi Dresser was created for the R & Company Gallery’s exhibition Objects:USA 2024 . A triennial exhibition surveying the best and most innovative makers in contemporary design, craft and art. With over a thousand hours of work makes this piece our most ambitious work. It is made of almost entirely plywood scraps from our neighbors’ cabinet shops saving over 400 pounds of wood from going to the landfill transforming the scraps into a piece of art that can last generations.

The Forest Cabinet is one of the most ambitious pieces we’ve created. It’s comprised of over 350 pounds of scrap plywood and pays homage to its precious source, the trees.

The Nerikomi Benches were created for the exhibition Benediction at Friends Art Space. They are made from scrap plywood that we saved from our neighbors who make cabinets. The plywood was stack laminated into a large block then sculpted into an organic functional shape that reveals the striations created by the layers of the plywood. The Bench is comprised of two pieces that are interchangeable; when mated they create a solid surface to sit on, when separated they are functionless.

The Composition Sideboard is made from our Nerikomi wood that we create by reclaiming scrap plywood from multiple cabinet shops in our area and then cutting it into uniform pieces and painstakingly gluing the pieces together to create a patterned material. This piece is shown in our bleached finish with various patterns.

The Trellis planter was designed for your houseplant that needs something interesting to grow upon. It was sculpted from Ash wood and then dyed multiple colors. There are two bowls, one for the plant and one to catch any overwatering. The bowls are made from stainless steel that then tempered with fire to create the coloring on the steel.

The Lotus Dining table is handmade from cherry and is 90” long by 44” wide by 29 1/2” tall.

The Nerikomi Bedside tables were the second Nerikomi commissioned project. They are a further exploration of the Nerikomi wood material made from high quality plywood waste.

Each Bedside table prevented over 50 lbs from going to the landfill.

The Nerikomi Wood Console 01 began as a material exploration in 2018. I was interested in finding a purpose and elevating the high quality scrap plywood that cabinet shops throw away regularly. These scraps are odd sizes and generally small strips, so there was extensive experimentation to be able to effectively use these pieces and to do it in an interesting and beautiful way. I took inspiration from the Nerikomi pottery technique to create the method that we use to make the patterns. This piece is made entirely from waste wood.

The shape of the piece informed by the material. It has large flat surfaces in order to show the intricate patterns created from the scrap as well as curved surfaces that show distortions in the patterns as they were shaped and cut on a bias or curve.

This piece saved over 150 lbs from going the landfill.

The wave console was inspired by watching the ocean and how the sea foam would move over the water as the waves would come in. The wood grain rolls over the peaks of the shelves on the console table in the same way. This table is shown in white oak, but custom options are available upon request.

The Ridge Stool and Side Table stacks. Singly the Ridge Stool is a low seat or a step up, stacked once it becomes a standard seat or a side table, and stacked again it becomes a pedestal. We explored the boundary between texture and shape in order to disguise the seam that results from stacking, this way it functions beautifully in all of its forms. Custom options available upon request.
